More like a 3.5 . The writing was good. The premise a little different. The secondary story that feed into the next book was not as strong or obvious to me. I actually started with the third book and read this one last, but they were written well enough that you could read them out of order and not be at a major loss.

Lady Folbroke Delicious Deception Mills Boon Historical Christine Merrill 9780263882438 Books Reviews

I can't even cut this guy some slack because of his disability. Lots of people learn to cope when life hands them lemons. This guy takes his lemons and places them on the ground in front of himself, trying to trip and break his neck in the fall, all the while feeling sorry for himself and having nary a care for the people in his life. He's a jerk. It's a shame. Merrill wrote this pretty well but my dislike of the hero was too great for me to rate the book with more stars.

Hero Adrian, Earl of Folbroke, marries Emily Longesley, the sister of a close friend, consummates the marriage for 3 nights (not very romantically or skillfully) and then up and leaves for London. She stays behind at his country estate and takes over the running of it, with occasional advice from either Adrian or his man of affairs and with strict orders not to show up in London. Three years pass this way.

Poor Emily has loved Adrian all her life and feels very neglected. Adrian's heir, cousin Rupert, is forever visiting her and trying to find out if Adrian is even alive. (He hasn't been seen in London to speak of.) Of course Rupert is hoping Adrian's dead so he can inherit but is told by a very frustrated Emily that yes, of course Adrian is alive and that she is even pregnant.

Now she'd better go to London herself, see Adrian and get herself pregnant ASAP. Turns out, though, that he doesn't want to be with anyone. He's on a self-destructive binge, trying to get himself killed because he can't handle his blindness. (His blindness is not a spoiler. The back blurb tells you this.)

Emily finds out about his problem and reaches out to him as if they were strangers since he does not recognize her at all. She helps him to see that life's worth living after all and they embark on an "illicit" affair in which Adrian is actually, the way I see it, being unfaithful to his wife by having an affair with his wife.

And what does he do when he finds out the truth? Oh, just read it. I refuse to think about it any more. I'm tired of Adrian and his petty problems and pretty much upset with Emily for loving him.

The sad thing about this is it's such a waste of talent. Merrill actually writes pretty well, but, unfortunately, she frequently has jerks for her heroes. (See Taken by the Wicked Rake (Harlequin Historical) as a case in point.) Couldn't she come up with a few who are less selfish, self-centered and uncaring?
This is an excellent book, plus I love reading Christine Merrill books I hope to continue reading her books. I hope to read more of the series.
Christine Merrill is a really good writer, I recommend her books.
Not that interesting and a little boring with too much details. I found myself skipping thru just to get to some action. The ending was very disappointing. Just okay, not the best.
A steamy love story with a wonderful ending. I love take charge female chararcters!
This is the first review I have ever written despite buying hundred of kindle books but I am compelled to. I loved this book. The pain and despair felt by Adrian who felt that his life was over because of his blindness was palpable. I think that it is understandable why he would have felt less than a man in the circumstances and why his inability to deal with his disability would have brought him to his knees causing him to desert his wife and place himself in danger with his drinking and forays into the seedier parts of London. Emily showed great strength and strong character in helping him see that he could be more than he was and that life was not over because he was blind. Her method was a little unorthrodox but achieved the desired outcome in the end. Just what every man needs .......a strong woman who can motivate you to be better than you are. A great read.
The story is set in the Regency Era, before there were any resources for people with vision loss.
Merrill is very humane and realistic in portrayal of the main character.
