First I wanted to say that overall I am pleased with my purchase. That said, I do have a few complaints about the book.

First off, I agree with one comment on the "busy" artwork. I too had difficulty seeing what was going on in some frames and found it really frustrating and distracting. I'm not a graphic novel expert, simply a fan of Dragon Age who also enjoys reading the occasional graphic novel, but I thought the artwork overall was beautiful.

The other problem I had was pages falling out halfway through reading it. There seemed to be an issue with the binding and MANY pages were only half bound into the spine and began slipping out the very first time I read the book. I have just contacted customer service and am awaiting a replacement to arrive within the next 2 days. Hopefully this was a fluke and the new one will be fine. I will update my review accordingly...

As for the overall story, I rather enjoyed it and anxiously await a volume 2. Of course it wasn't nearly as good as Gaiders novels, but then I didn't expect it to be. It was entertaining and I liked the character Gleam, despite the fact that it is a very common storyline.
From the perspective of an avid reader, I wasn't impressed with the story, but as a Dragon Age fan I am happy with my purchase and proud to add it to my collection... assuming the replacement does not have a defective binding.

Dragon Age Volume 1 Orson Scott Card Aaron Johnson Mark Robinson 9781600107740 Books Reviews

The story is interesting enough and based well in the fandom, however, I'm not a fan of that particular style of the art.

Still, it's solid story telling, albeit with little consequence to the story of the Dragon Age universe as connected to the Games and other books.
It's good, but not great. I like it, I don't love it. The story doesn't quite fit right with the universe at large. The art style isn't as clean as some of the stuff published by Dark Horse.
Great story, art is well done. I am not a huge fan of the backing though. It feels fragile, like the pages may separate from the binding if you open it too wide. Overall its a nice addition to your Dragon Age collection.
I didnt actually read the comic series (this is a compilation of the first six), so i was hoping this would be exceptional when i bought it. I'm a fan of Orson Scott Card in particular, so maybe i set my hopes a little high. I didnt realize each comic was a stand alone, but i cant blame the compilation for that. What i can say though is that the stories overall were obviously not well developed or thought out, and the art work wasnt really exceptional either. Well, i take that back....in many cases it was exceptionally busy, which made it difficult to really tell what was going on in certain frames.
So, for me, although it was overall a decent purchase, it didnt really wow me, and at times was actually annoying. If you are a fan of Dragon Age, you'll still want it for your collection, but if not, you probably shouldn't bother.
I give this three stars overall, but i really consider it to be a 2 1/2 star effort.
Dragon Age, volume 1 collects issues #1-6 of IDW's Dragon Age comic book, originally published in 2010. The graphic novel is well-produced with medium-gloss paper and a flexible spine. Extras include additional art by Mark Robinson and Humberto Ramos.

Orson Scott Card's well-plotted story tells of a magic-wielding girl, Gleam, who must escape from the Chantry with her friends after her adopted parents are murdered by bandits. Fans of the first video game will enjoy familiar aspects of her journey an encounter with blood mages, a trek through the Deep Paths, and a group of greedy dwarves, to name just a few. Unlike David Gaider's novels (Dragon Age The Stolen Throne and The Calling (Dragon Age)), however, IDW's graphic novel provides no new insight into the Dragon Age world or its major figures. It is thus more a self-contained spin-off than a tie-in. As for the art, Mark Robinson and Anthony J. Tan's pencils are good but something of an acquired taste; they are also unusually stylized for a fantasy comic book.

Fans of the Dragon Age universe will almost certainly enjoy this. Fantasy comic book fans will probably like it as well--but be warned, the plot does presuppose some minor familiarity with the games and/or novels.
I ordered one of these and really liked the story. As it others have said, there were no familiar characters, but it was a deeper look into the world of Dragon Age, especially if you are interested in the plight of the mages. The art was decent but it is definably a style you have to get used to. The binding though, UGH!! the first copy i got fell apart when I was reading it through the first time. So I got a replacement and when I opened it 3 pages fell out. I am just going to get a refund this time because I think the publisher had some serious problems. Maybe they will release it in a hard cover next time with the next set of Dragon Age comics. Fingers Crossed!
This a great book for any Dragon Age completest. The art is very fluid and wave-like and can take some getting used to, but on the whole is absolutely lovely. The story is a bit lacking due to cliche tropes, but not overly so. That being said, just know that this book lends no new world information for Dragon Age, and is irrelevant to all other Dragon Age pieces - and that leaves it feeling a bit dissonant from the rest of the universes' deeply interconnected stories. Still, it was a good story with nice art. Any Dragon Age lover would definitely enjoy this.
