If you are looking for an easy read, this one isn't for you. Redeeming Brother Murrihy is deep; best read slowly so that you can savour the rich descriptions, poignant inner dialogue, and extensive cultural background that is so skilfully woven throughout. A Canadian born journalist sets off to find his missing brother in the backwoods of New Zealand and bring him back to honour their dying mother's wish. His quest turns out to be anything but easy as he follows a rabbit trail of clues. In the process, he learns of his brother's complicated spiritual journey and, ultimately, discovers more about himself than he ever expects. This is not a high action or adventure story, but the personal and inner tension is so taut, it rings with impact. From a theological standpoint, readers should be prepared for some broad doctrinal interpretations. However, as a book of inner discovery, it definitely delivers.

Redeeming Brother Murrihy The River To Hiruharama edition by Antony Millen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The story of Brother (Francis) Murrihy is told by Conrad Murrihy, his estranged brother. Their mother is dying and at her request Conrad leaves Canada to seek out Francis in New Zealand and return him to her.

What follows is a strange journey into King Country NZ. Our narrator is a cynical fellow, with little time for race or religion. Unfortunately for him those are the exact things Francis has gotten himself wrapped up in.

While the story is populated by genuine characters and vivid real settings, it is weakened slightly by the fact we spend the majority of the book inside Conrad's head. Its not a bad place, its just literature is much more engaging with an ensemble.

Towards the conclusion things start to get a bit more interesting and the book was a very enjoyable read, I have to mention this isn't an 'all questions answered' or 'high drama' kind of book. Redeeming Brother Murrihy is more of a 'real if only it wasn't made up' kind of piece.
When I started reading this I thought it was way out of my comfort zone. It is set in 2004, so it isn't historical fiction, and there was no old family secret to unearth. But, as I continued reading, I realized that it wasn't so terribly different from what I usually read. And, there WAS a big family mystery that had to be figured out after all.

And while it was the familiarity of solving that mystery that kept me turning the pages, it was the main character's journey that really made me think. Conrad went of a journey not just from Canada to New Zealand, but also on a journey of faith and family.

I will admit that it was a bit more theological than I had expected, and than I normally enjoy. I didn't mind the religious plot, but some of the ideas were beyond me. I tried to keep track, but I did get confused in some places.

The author definitely created a compelling story though. I could not wait to finish this book because I HAD to find out what happened to Frankie. The ending was not a disappointment. It made sense. It was right.

As I followed Conrad all around New Zealand I thought about how much research Mr. Millen must have done. He combined the catholic religion with the beliefs and language of the native people. He used these characters and beliefs to show what faith and family really means.

I am so thankful to Mr. Millen for giving me the opportunity to read and review his novel. If you are looking for something a little different, something that will make you stop and think, then I suggest you give it a try.
I enjoyed this book for a number of reasons it was something a bit different, it was set--mainly--in rural New Zealand (somewhere I should like to go), and it was written with great sincerity and feeling.

Francis Murrihy left Canada with his wife and children to go and live in New Zealand. But after a devastating tragedy all contact with his family back in Canada ceased, inexplicably. When his mother becomes fatally ill, it falls upon his brother, Conrad, to track him down to fulfil his mother's wish that she should see him before he dies. The task is not an easy one. The trail is a blurred one, and Conrad is confronted and frustrated by a degree of unhelpfulness and prevarication. Along the way, Conrad, though at first angry and irritated by his brother's selfish disappearance, finds himself examining his own life and attitudes.

This book is the author's first novel and is one he should be proud of. It really is quite absorbing, and a reader can take from it what s/he wants. There is a religious content (but the book in no way falls under the Christian fiction genre). However, it's not major, so if you're not in the slightest bit interested in religion (like me), it's not a deal-breaker. The descriptions of the New Zealand scenery were immensely vivid. Written in the first person (Conrad), it was easy to feel his emotions, which ranged from anger, confusion, annoyance, regret, remorse and compassion.

This is entirely personal, but I wasn't too keen on the punctuating chapters of 'te wahini'...I just didn't get them...nor did I warm to the use of present-tense narrative, but again, this wasn't a deal breaker.

This is a book of many layers with surprises and revelations between each one.
A great read! Its lovely to recognise places I'm reading about, and I'm sure I've even met some of the characters. The main character is so up front and honest you cant help but connect with him. Very enjoyable!
If you have ever immigrated to another country and felt lost as you acclimated with the culture and terrain then you will totally identify with this novel.. But even if you haven't, you will enjoy the twists and turns as you watch one brother search for another.. Worth the read and hoping that this author is penning his second novel as I write this review.. Well done!
