The most incredible thing happened during this book !
I changed my mind three times I never do that about a book.

Well, now I'm sure you wonder what got into me (or you don't actually care and want me to write my damn review).

For starters, I'd like to applaud Jill Archer. I still think her settings are pretty cool and it doesn't get old by the second book like it did with Shadow Reader.
Also, the characters evolve but they keep true to how they were originally made, which is a lacking trait in most book. I consider that it means Archer is talented - that I knew - and a hard worker. I appreciate that.

So, why two stars ?
I began the book right after finishing the first one. The beginning felt like the very continuation of the book I had just finished. The main character is still hesitant and hurt about what happened but she came to terms with who she is (good because it was the boring part in the previous book).
Then, Noon leaves school to fulfil a Maegester duty. After the first evening on the boat, I grew bored. Very, very, very bored. And because they stayed on the boat for the second third of the book, I stopped caring for a while. I read the book in the transports without caring much for what I was reading. Jill Archer used that part to introduce us more closely to all the new characters. And, because we are all very intelligent, we know that when we care for characters… Something happens to them !
Finally, around 70-75% of the book, they got off the boat. They were changed, and part of my newly found interest was : how much have they changed ? What does Rafe know ?
Fortunately for Fara, she had changed the most, so she became interesting to read ! Hallelujah people !
The investigation was a much more interesting part. And full of revelations ! I mean, I thought something was bound to happen with Ari, but I was completely surprised. And even more so by Delgato.

I am very happy about how the book turned out. The only thing that sanctioned this book - beside the fact there is still no fun at all. Don't they ever laugh ? - was the second third. That part could have easily been shorter and the ultimate third longer. All in all, it was still a good book, that I will recommend to those who really liked - as much as I did - the first one.

Fiery Edge of Steel A Noon Onyx Novel Jill Archer 9780425257166 Books Reviews

This is a wonderfully inventive series....definitely not the typical fantasy romance. The world building is deep, the characters memorable and the plot well thought out. I look forward to reading the next in the series and can't wait to see what happens next to Noon and Ari.
Archer creates a world that can only be imagined by genius through thoughtful insight to both historical and mythical elements. Intriguing and compelling, it is one of the best books I have read in 2013. I hope this narrative continues. I will never miss one of Archer's books. I'm a true fan of Noon Onyx!
I have enjoyed both of Jill Archer's books. Noon Onyx and the other characters in the books are captivating and Jill Archer has created an interesting world and storyline. Very entertaining. I will continue to read her work.
Another great story!
I read a lot of sci-fi and sword and sorcery stories so it's refreshing to read about a strong lead female character. She doesn't start out all powerful and knowing, you get to watch her grow into her powers and postion.

Reminnds me of the Honor Harrington series and some others that I have read. Can't wait for the next one!
I liked Fiery Edge of Steel because you see Noon begin to wield her power. She has grown stronger in is book, but clearly has quite a long journey ahead of her. Her romance with Ari takes a bit of a back burner role and is really just a peripheral part of the story until the 2nd half. That really renders a pivotal seen near the book's end a little less impactful for me.

I am intrigued by the new characters introduced; especially Rafe. I'm curious to see how he's able to inspire Noon to learn how to embrace her magic. I like how Rafe is quiet, and doesn't judge Noon for her reluctance to use her magic. Yet, he has a unique way I'd challenging her and more importantly, challenging her thoughts and feelings about using waning magic. The one complaint I have about Ari is that he is constantly pointing out her moral obligation to use her waning magic, and yet tries to shield and coddle her. This prevents me from wanting to see Ari and Noon together as a couple.

I recommend this book to fans of the urban fantasy genre.
I remember reading about the first book in this series and loving the premise. When I finally read it, I still loved the premise and looked forward to the next book hoping the protagonist would really come into her own. For the record, I don't require my "empowered, female leads" to be badasses, but I like growth. In this book, I felt that Noon had moments of greatness, that were overtaken by moments YA hysteria. I still love the premise, but I wanted to like the story more.
